The topic of raising chickens rarely comes up in a normal conversation… but if it does, whenever we tell people we have chickens we’re bombarded with a ton of questions. Why? Is it hard to take care of them? What do you feed them? How many eggs do they lay? Steve talked about getting chickens for awhile but I kept telling him he was crazy, that is until we visited his brother who had a whole bunch of them running around his property. They were so cute and Amelia had a blast chasing them around. So one Saturday about a year ago when I was at a wedding, Steve took Amelia to pick out a few little chicks.
Steve was going to put up a simple coop but after a little bit of googling, I found a much cuter option. So he got to building and now our chicks have a sweet place to sleep at night! They’re super easy to take care of, just make sure they have fresh water and food — we shut up the coop at night (especially after a possum attack on one of the girls, no worries she survived), and let them out during the day to peck around and give themselves dirt baths. They lay one egg per day (can you imagine?!) but they go through resting periods too. It’s crazy when they are all laying and we have 5 fresh eggs a day! Let’s just say we eat a lot of omelets and make tons of wasabi deviled eggs, yum. My favorite is when they hop up next to the window outside our sunroom and peer inside, they’re curious little birds and so cute. So to answer another common question… no, we will never eat them. : )
