Interior Style Progression

You know, I find it interesting how personal style develops when it comes to interior design.  Before I went to design school, I loved anything in Coastal Living Magazine.  I loved beachy interiors with slipcovers and cottagey looking furniture.

When I was in college, whether influenced by the urge to fit in or an actual attraction, I was interested in retro mid-century modern… anything like this.

After working at a transitional interior design firm for over four years, my tastes were honed from being surrounded by classic design and furniture.  I learned the basics of good design — draperies must have a 1/4″ break, waterfall skirts are my favorite on a sofa, I could go on and on.  At that job I was surrounded by interiors like this.

Now, I find my taste is somewhere between all of these… I appreciate and love classic pieces but enjoy a little bit of funk.  I love textures, industrial elements and surprisingly to myself, neutrals.  It’s funny how what you think you like is sometimes a little different than what you actually end up choosing to live with.
